How to Make Your Centerpiece Last Longer

How to Make Your Centerpiece Last Longer: 6 Expert Floral Tips from Our Designer

There’s something quietly extraordinary about walking into your home and being greeted by a stunning floral arrangement. It’s not just décor—it’s emotion. It’s a curated moment of beauty, crafted just for you.

At Centerpiece, we believe that elegance should linger. So today, our designers are sharing their most trusted tips to help your blooms stay fresher, longer—ensuring each arrangement continues to brighten your space and your spirit.

1. Find the Right Spot (Low-Traffic, High-Impact)

Your centerpiece deserves a place of honor—one where it can be admired without disruption. Choose a low-traffic area that still draws eyes and sparks joy:

  • A foyer console, just inside your entryway
  • The formal dining room table (especially if not used daily)
  • A reading nook or home office corner
  • Your bedroom dresser—yes, even you deserve bedside blooms

Avoid setting flowers near doors, vents, or busy kitchen counters, where constant movement and drafts can shorten their lifespan.

2. Keep Out of Direct Sunlight

While your plants may enjoy soaking up the sun, fresh-cut flowers feel quite the opposite.
Direct sunlight accelerates wilting by overheating petals and drying out stems.
Instead, place your arrangement in a softly lit area with indirect light to preserve their color, form, and freshness.

3. Feed Your Flowers – Why Flower Food Matters

Each Centerpiece arrangement comes with a delicate sachet of floral food—don’t toss it aside.
This blend of nutrients helps your flowers stay vibrant and hydrated by:

  • Slowing bacteria growth
  • Providing essential sugars
  • Balancing pH for better water absorption

To use: Mix the flower food into room-temperature tap water each time you change it.

It’s why fresh florals, like the ones from your Centerpiece subscription, matter so much. They aren’t just lovely to look at. They remind you to slow down, to breathe, and to cherish the beauty blooming right where you are.

4. Refresh the Water Every 1–2 Days

Just like we thrive with clean hydration, so do your flowers.
Replace the water regularly to prevent bacterial build-up. Tap water is perfect (in fact, the trace chlorine helps reduce bacteria). There’s no need for distilled water—fresh from the sink works just fine.

Room-temperature water is ideal. Cold water can shock delicate blooms, and hot water may damage them entirely.

5. Trim Those Stems—But Do It Right

Before placing your blooms—or when refreshing your water—give the stems a fresh cut:

  • Woody stems like roses, hydrangeas, and carnations should be cut at an angle to increase surface area and boost water absorption.
  • Hollow stems such as tulips, ranunculus, anemones, and delphinium should be cut straight across to prevent them from drinking too much water and “drowning.”
  • Skip the greenery—those delicate, textured leaves don’t need trimming unless they’re below the waterline.

6. Hands Off the Petals

As tempting as it is to admire their velvety softness—don’t touch!
Oils from our hands can cause petals to bruise or wilt faster. That’s why our team sometimes wears gloves while designing your arrangement—to ensure your flowers arrive in pristine, lasting condition.

Always handle arrangements by the stems only.

Bonus: Love Them Well

Last, stand back and admire your arrangement. Smile. Take a breath. Share a laugh in the room they’re in. Flowers have a proven effect on our emotional wellbeing—lowering stress, boosting mood, and inviting calm.

Let them become more than a centerpiece. Let them become your moment of beauty each day.
